Cerebral Palsy
A medical disorder where a person is unable to control the movements of their body. It is caused by an injury to the brain, usually before or soon after birth.
Symptoms can include difficulty in coordinating movements (like walking), the experiencing of seizures, trouble hearing or speaking (affecting their performance at school), as well as a loss of bladder and bowel control.
In order to alleviate these symptoms, individuals with cerebral palsy can be provided equipment such as braces or splints to help stretch their muscles, improving range of movement. They can be prescribed medications to reduce muscle spasms, control abnormal movement and prevent seizures. In addition to this, these individuals often require speech pathologist input to support communication difficulties, regular hearing and eyesight checks, hydrotherapy and massages to manage pain, as well as enrolling in special schools to support learning difficulties.
